NAN Condenms Campaign of Hatred Against INEC Chairman Prof. Yakubu

The Northern Awareness Network (NAN) says it stands resolutely in defense of the integrity of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and its Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu.

A statement issued by it’s Chairman Salihu Suleiman said, as we approach another crucial election period in Nigeria, it is imperative to address the insidious campaign of misinformation and vilification being perpetuated by unscrupulous politicians who seek to undermine the democratic process for their own gain.

“Once again, we witness the familiar spectacle of politically motivated attacks against the INEC Chairman, cloaked under the guise of “concerned staff” and shadowy civil society organizations. This orchestrated campaign is not a new phenomenon; it is a recurring strategy employed by those who, in their desperation to sway public opinion and manipulate electoral outcomes, resort to character assassination and baseless allegations.

“In the lead-up to the governorship elections in Bayelsa, Imo, Kogi, and Edo States, we observed a similar pattern of harassment directed at Professor Yakubu. These attacks were not only unfounded but also indicative of a deeper malaise within our political landscape—one that thrives on division and discord rather than constructive engagement. Now, as we approach the Ondo State Governorship Election, the same nefarious tactics are being revived, and we cannot remain silent.

“The latest round of accusations against Professor Yakubu revolves around a clumsy allegation that the Commission has failed to implement the National Minimum Wage Act 2024 for INEC staff since its enactment. The claim, propagated by individuals masquerading as concerned employees of the Commission, is patently false and serves only to distract from the real issues at hand”.

The network said, it is crucial to note that the Chairman has never stated that there is no money available to implement the Act; rather, he has been transparent about the financial constraints and the need for prudent fiscal management within the Commission.

“In a democracy, the role of the electoral body is pivotal. INEC is tasked with ensuring free, fair, and credible elections, a responsibility that demands not only integrity but also the unwavering support of all stakeholders. The incessant attacks on Professor Yakubu are not merely personal affronts; they are attacks on the very foundation of our democracy. By undermining the credibility of the INEC Chairman, these politicians are, in effect, undermining the electoral process itself, sowing seeds of doubt and mistrust among the electorate.

NAN called upon all Nigerians to reject the divisive rhetoric and unfounded accusations that have become all too familiar in our political discourse, adding that it is essential for the public to discern between legitimate concerns and politically motivated smear campaigns.

“We urge the media, civil society, and the general populace to exercise caution and critical thinking when confronted with sensational claims that lack substantiation.

“We implore our political leaders to engage in constructive dialogue rather than resorting to tactics that breed animosity and conflict. The path to a thriving democracy lies in collaboration and mutual respect among all stakeholders, including the electoral body, political parties, and the citizenry. It is the responsibility of our leaders to foster an environment that encourages transparency, accountability, and civic engagement.

“As we approach the Ondo State Governorship Election, we must remain vigilant against the forces that seek to destabilize our democratic processes. We call on the relevant authorities to investigate these baseless allegations and hold accountable those who seek to manipulate the narrative for their own selfish interests. The integrity of our electoral system is at stake, and it is our collective duty to protect it.

The NAN reaffirmed its unwavering support for Professor Mahmood Yakubu and the Independent National Electoral Commission and stand against the tide of hatred and misinformation that threatens the sanctity of our democracy. Let us unite in our commitment to uphold the principles of fairness, justice, and respect for the rule of law. “Together, we can ensure that the voice of the Nigerian people is heard and respected in every election” the statement added.
