Kaduna Club Legal Tussle: Drama As Two Secretaries of EXCO Show Up

The last may still not have been heard on the court case instituted by some “concerned members” of Kaduna Club a foremost internationally acclaimed sporting and recreational Club against the Kaduna state Government, some of it’s agencies as well as Management Executive Committee of the Club over the invasion of the club properties by unknown private developers.

The continuation of the age-long legal tussle at Kaduna State High Court on Monday witnessed a mild drama as members of the club produced an order dissolving the embattled executive members of the club and restraining them from parading themselves as decision makers on behalf of others.

Reasons for dissolving the former Exco was predicated on the Kaduna State high court “consent judgement” of June 22, 2021, which stipulated a two-year tenure for elected executive members.

Members of the dissolved committee, whose action of allegedly colluding with Government officials, unknown private developers and conceeding the club’s landed property ( for which they lack the constitutional powers to do) had been in office for over four years presiding over the affairs of the club; in violation of the consent court judgements of June 22, 2021 which required them to conduct a free and fair election into the Executive Committee after two years from that day; which they failed to.

The “Concerned members”, armed with the court order that dissolved the previous Management Committee whose tenure lapsed on 22 June, 2023 nominated and ratified the appointment of a caretaker committee, pending the conduct of an election of a substantive Executive Management Committee of the Club in compliance with the aforesaid order.

The secretary of the dissolved committee Mohammed Ajagun however feigned ignorance of the dissolution of his Exco before the presiding judge on the matter when parties on the case were called out to indicate appearance as a tradition in the nation’s judicial proceedings.

The new secretary of the caretaker committee Abdulmajid Halliru was swift to produce a competent court order before the judge, validating the action of the members of constituting a caretaker committee.

The judge, however, adjourned the case for continued hearing to allow all interested parties to file in necessary responses on 8 May 2025.

Counsels to fifth, sixth, and seventh defendants did not object to the decision of the judge for adjournment.

It will be recalled that members of Kaduna club founded in 1932 as a foremost sporting and recreational organisation had dragged the erstwhile president and secretary of misappropriation of the club’s finances and conspiracy to take possession of the assets belonging to the club via questionable concession process through proxies.

An action they alleged before a judge ran contrary to the club’s constitution, which was registered as a sporting and recreational facility

The Kaduna club, located along the famous Waff Road in the heart of the city centre, has been known to provide social, recreation, and brotherhood avenue for members from different works of life. Its “Clay” lawn tennis courts had hosted several international competitions in the past.
